April 3, 2012

It has been two months since I last sent an update! I apologize. If you want more frequent updates you can follow me on Twitter (@mattrbarnes) or facebook.com/barnes.matthew.

The month of March was the end of the longest "short session" I have been a part of! This was far and away our busiest session ever. Praise the Lord for opportunities to serve Him in the political arena.

Capitol Commission Indiana Events
We were blessed to host three large events this year in our Statehouse:

8TH ANNUAL STATEHOUSE PRAYER SERVICE
(This event was described in our last newsletter)

PASTORS' STATEHOUSE DAY
I must say that the six months of planning, hundreds of invitations, etc. was worth every minute and penny spent for this event. This biennial event is at the heart of the vision the Lord has given me for this ministry. Seeing pastors and lay leaders on a "short term mission trip" to minister to political leaders through prayer and encouragement was, in a word, awesome! The outpouring of support and positive comments from this event have been overwhelming. Here are the highlights:

Attendees met in the Government Center in the morning hours, listening to speakers in various positions in the Statehouse share their lives. Our goals were to have the pastors understand more about the capitol community, recognize that these public servants are people in need of biblical support just like their own congregation, and encourage the pastors to get to know, minister to and pray for their leaders.

Afterward, they walked next door to the Statehouse to meet and have lunch with their legislators. There were a few nervous minutes when it looked like the legislature might not break for lunch at all, but soon the atrium was filled with pastors conversing, giving gift bags, presenting Bibles, and praying with their legislators. God truly showed up in a miraculous way that day. Please pray that these pastors continue to further the relationships with their legislators and minister to them.

CAPITOL MOVIE NIGHT
In coordination with Chick-fil-A at Circle Center Mall in Indy, we hosted a Movie night for the capitol community, showing "Courageous" at a downtown hotel. The event was successful on many fronts. We had a good attendance the night of the showing. One of the senators commented that it was the best event he had been to this year. A representative said that the event might just be the most significant thing accomplished all session! The corporate offices of Chick-fil-A also provided DVD copies of "Courageous" for all legislators who wanted one, regardless of whether they were able to make it to the event.

Prayer for Leaders
The sacrifice of those serving us in the legislature often goes unnoticed. It is a particular challenge for their families. Please continue to pray for your leaders in specific ways. If you would like a daily reminder of 3 legislators to pray for, please visit publicservantsprayer.org/indiana and sign up.

Trip to D.C.
I am honored to have been asked to pray in Washington D.C. for the opening of the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Marlin Stutzman. If you have access to the internet or C-Span on April 25th, you can watch this live. The session is slated to begin at noon. Please pray for my words. They will be recorded in the official House record. The prayer has to be less than 150 words, so it will be brief.

While in D.C., we will be meeting with other members of Congress and delivering a couple of new Bibles to freshman legislators. Please pray for wisdom and insight in my prayer and meetings, favor in God-ordained appointments, and a safe trip for our family.

U.S. Capitol

Thank You!
Once again, thank you for all of your prayers and support. I am a nobody, and anybody could do what I do because, "Anybody can do what nobody does if anybody would simply believe that Somebody can do anything with nothing!" God continues to do a great work in our Statehouse and beyond. Praise the Lord!

Grace and Peace,

Matthew Barnes
