It is a "Super Sunday" and the pressure can be immense. The uniform needs to be sharp, the plays must be properly executed, the rulebook must be followed, and of course the audience has to be impressed. You have to perform... you are a professional. Everything you say and do will be compared to the rest of your team and probably every other team.

So it can become in the life of a missionary. Every update must be more impressive than the last; after all we are building God's Kingdom. The fans (or donors) hope to have bet on a winner. Besides, others in the game report to be having enormous success. What has happened? Is your so-called "program" working? Don't fumble the ball!

I labored to recall a modern missions update I've received which reports much that is negative. Then I remembered one from a missionary named Paul writing to his friend Timothy near the end of Paul's very lengthy and devoted ministry:

Make every effort to come to me soon; for Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Pick up Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service. But Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. When you come bring the cloak which I left at Troas with Carpus, and the books, especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. Be on guard against him yourself, for he vigorously opposed our teaching. At my first defense no one supported me, but all deserted me; may it not be counted against them. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fully accomplished, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was rescued out of the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen (2Timothy 4:9-18).

It is easy for a missionary to feel pressured into embellishing. I strive to avoid that; it is sin. Honestly, the ministry has been extremely challenging for Rita and me. Increasing relationships with leaders (which aren't simply "superficial") is difficult and time consuming. And, as you are well aware, Christians and church doors are repeatedly knocked on by organizations and missionaries simply petitioning more money. My goal is to increasingly follow the example of Paul in regard to this (Acts 20:33-35, 1Thessalonians 2:9-10, 2Thessalonians 3:7-8).

  • Rita and my utmost desire is to sow seeds of the gospel and bring glory to the name of Christ. My prayer request for you today is that God find us useful for this very purpose. Thank you so much for your prayers and encouragement.
