Happy Independence Day!
I want to wish you and yours a joy-filled, safe, and happy Independence Day, from our family to yours.
Several things amaze me as I consider the products of our founding fathers.
Consider for a moment The Declaration of Independence. First, the Founding Fathers exemplified tremendous courageous, and second, they very thoughtfully pursued a more excellent form of government and challenged their current government on the basis of a transcendent notion, namely that God is a greater authority than government, and when there is no higher human authority to appeal to for help, God is there and we are right to appeal to Him. How so?
Like the New Testament Apostles, the founding fathers had to decide who they were going to obey God or men.
Under the king-centered government of their day, they had no representation. They could not elect people to represent them or make much-needed corrections in laws and enforcement of just practices. Therefore they sought to make much-needed improvements, and because all appeals to the king went unheard, they appealed to God.
They viewed God as higher than the king.
They viewed God as the head or "executive" of heaven and earth, as a God of laws or "legislative", and the judge of heaven and earth, thus having a "judicial" role. Utilising these necessary roles, the founding fathers sought to divide the powers of the king on this basis (i.e. the three branches of Government executive, legislative and judicial). By doing so, our founding fathers sought to prevent as much as was humanly possible, the wielding of power by one person who might exercise envy and selfish ambition, which would inevitably lead to disorder and every evil practice.
Consider how our founding fathers appealed to God in The Declaration of Independence.
In Paragraph one, God is referred to as "Natures God", In the second paragraph they appealed to God as their Creator and concluded that all men were created equal. In the last paragraph, God is appealed to as the "Supreme Judge of the world". The declaration of Independence is closed with these words, "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." Then they sealed their fate with their signatures. They entrusted their fate with God and each other, so that future generation could have the freedoms they needed to prosper, and America is at this time the most prosperous nation on earth. I do not boast in saying this, but only seek to underscore how exceptional those founding documents have contributed to our benefit, and the benefit of so many others, even to this day.
Amazing to consider isn't it? This is what is often referred to as American Exceptionalism.
It is not that Americans are any better than anyone else, It is not that our political system is perfect, neither our executive, legislative or judicial system is, but rather that our founding documents sought to provide a fair and just division of powers, and they recognized that good leadership entailed leadership by the consent of the governed, which in our case is given and protected by our constitution, and by electing leaders to represent us While not a perfect system, it does at least somewhat preserve the concept of government of the people, by the people, and for the people, so that all individuals could enjoy maximum freedom, and protection from the many possible forms of abuse of power from our own government. Because of these documents, we enjoy freedoms as a nation to prosper spiritually, and economically, and in nearly every way that is not physically detrimental to others.
It would be easy to overlook these blessings as we seek to BBQ, hang out with family and friends and blow-up great fireworks.
However, this is a great opportunity to talk with your family and friends and share what you understand with them about the blessings God has provided you, not only through our form of government but even far more importantly, through your eternally saving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, the only all-benevolent Prince of Peace and King of kings.
