THE GEORGIA CAPITOL DEVOTIONAL - 13 November 2018
Abraham Kuyper was a Dutch pastor, theologian, and politician of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Having served in the pastorate, Kuyper became interested in politics. As a scholar, he developed the concept of “sphere sovereignty” (the exercise of divine sovereignty in the church, society, and state) and, as a theologian, sought to implement his idea.
Sphere sovereignty is the concept that God created various spheres of life that are directly accountable to Him within each of those respective sectors. Kuyper’s worldview was the application of the Word of God to every “sphere” of life. According to his famous dictum, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’”
Much more important than Kuyper’s choice of words, however, is the biblical truth that it reflects. Revelation 4:11 praises God for creating all things and the fact that because of his will they exist. What this means is you have never seen anything in your life that God did not create. Furthermore, the Lord God is personally involved in upholding in existence the very things that are in your field of vision at the present moment. Hebrews 1:3 declares that it is God who “upholds all things by the word of His power.” All created things, including the person looking at them, were made “by” and “through” Christ for one supreme reason: to belong to Christ (Col 1:16).
Christ is not only the Creator of every object or person you have ever seen, but He is also the destiny of every person you have encountered, and every thought you have ever contemplated. For this reason, Second Corinthians 10:5 commands, take “every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” Nothing would exist without the Lord’s sustaining of you and the things in your purview. Matthew 10:29 declares that not even a sparrow “will fall to the ground apart from” the Lord God.
God’s plan for the entire universe, including you, is subjection under Christ’s rule (Eph 1:22). Understanding the ultimate destiny of all creation means that God certainly has an interest in using his people to accomplish those same purposes in those various spheres. Certainly, it is not necessary for you and I to assist God in his sovereign plans, yet the Bible does reveal that the Lord chooses to involve his people in his plans for creation. How should this thought relate to you today? When you find your heart and mind wanting to restrict God’s authority over your entire life, the truth of God’s sovereignty over all is most helpful. Why would anyone not want to be involved in God’s plans for the entire universe? The believer has the wonderful privilege of living by God’s grace and for his glory.
