Wisdom from above is gentle. In a world that says you must assert yourself and confront problems in a very confident or direct manner to make a difference, divine wisdom operates differently. Knowing that our Lord is sovereign and engaged, and building his church, enables the Lord’s servant to “not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness” (2 Timothy 2:24–25). Pray that you would have enough confidence in God to trust his will and ways, and play your part in his plan with patience and gentleness.

What is your reaction when you hear Jesus’ words, “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt 5:5)? If we are honest, we may think incorrectly that those who are not gentle will trample those who are. Gentleness is often regarded as weakness, even being spineless. One of the reasons it is important to read the Bible in the original language or, at least, to benefit from a pastor who does or to use resources yourself to help in that regard is that understanding the Greek word praotÄ“s translated “gentleness” will allow us to understand why the Lord commands his people to be gentle.

When a wild stallion is tame and brought under control, it is described as being gentle. Words that are chosen carefully to demonstrate empathy are called “gentle.” Ointment that soothes a fever or alleviates the sting from a wound is referenced as “gentle.”  According to the Greek philosopher Plato, a child asked the physician to be “gentle” in his treatment. People who are polite, who are courteous and have discretion, who treat others with dignity and respect can be called “gentle.”

Gentleness is “strength under control.” There is the strength of steel in gentleness because the supreme characteristic of a person who is gentle is that he or she is under perfect control. Gentleness is not a spineless gentleness, sentimental fondness, or passive quietism. A gentle person is not someone afflicted with a sense of inferiority; rather a gentle person may be bold as a lion and strong as Samson because of how God works in his or her life.

Gentleness involves being like Christ Jesus for the word “gentle” describes his own character. Jesus said,

"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Matt 11:28-29).

Remember the earlier statement of Jesus (Matt 5:5)? What is the promise that the “gentle . . . shall inherit the earth”? There are two ways to understand that promise, both in the present and the future (and probably both are meant).

The gentle do well in this life; and, when the Lord establishes his kingdom on this earth, the gentle will be given vast territories to judge and to rule. You never lose in being gentle. You gain! You have an advantage! You succeed! Sometimes it appears that those opposed to God are winning. Be assured that those supposed victories will not endure. Psalm 37:7-11 says,

Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. Cease from anger and forsake wrath; do not fret; it leads only to evildoing. For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land. Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; and you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there. But the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

The gentle are victorious! Believe that truth! Be different in this day and age. Trust the Lord God to manifest his promise regarding your inheritance knowing it is you who will be blessed.
