THE GEORGIA CAPITOL DEVOTIONAL - 24 March 2020

Psalm 91 emphasizes the security of the person who trusts in the Lord. The psalmist knew that God provides absolute security. Psalm 91 is a hymn that is appropriate for circumstances involving danger, uncertainty, or vulnerability.

The basis of security for the believer is the character of God (vv. 1-2). The psalmist trusted God to be his “shelter,” “shadow,” and “refuge and . . . fortress.” God is described as “the Most High” (his sovereignty) and “the Almighty” (his omnipotence). Those who trust in Him find that He is “the shelter” from the hazards of life and “the shadow” of security. The imagery suggests the safety of baby birds under the wings of an adult bird (cf. v. 4). God is a “refuge” to the believer in times of danger. His people depend upon Him to protect them (v. 3). He is also a “fortress” providing defense for families and homes against many dangers (cf. v. 4). The description of God as a “refuge” and “fortress” suggests a military installation or stronghold.

God’s people encounter danger from diseases such as cancer and the novel COVID-19 virus, in addition to hazards in times of civil unrest and everyday perils on roadways. Moreover, spiritual conflict can arise from evil powers or wicked people, including subtle temptations that entice one to “drift away” from God (Heb 2:1) and from moral and spiritual health (cf. John 10:10; 14:16-17; 1 Cor 6:19-20; 1 Tim 4:8). God’s people know they are safe in times of danger, whether physical or spiritual. Authentic faith is committing oneself to God in complete dependence upon his ability to provide and protect. His lovingkindness is such that the Lord guards his people from evil (Ps 91:5-6), unlike those who fall because they reject his protection and salvation (vv. 7-8). God protects his own from all kinds of dangers (v. 4, 9-13)!

God promises to deliver those who know and love Him (vv. 14-16). The Lord promises, “Because he has loved Me . . . I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name” (v. 14). The reciprocal nature of the mutual fellowship between God and those who love Him is noteworthy. Authentic faith involves a fervent, mutual love between the Lord and the believer. The Almighty will successively deliver those who trust in Him. The one whose allegiance is to the Lord experiences God’s protective faithfulness.

Psalm 91 does not mean that God’s people are delivered from all dangers. God did not declare salvation from all trouble; rather, He declared, “I will be with him in trouble” (v. 15). The promise that “no evil will befall you” (v. 10) means nothing that occurs is beyond the Lord’s sovereign control (cf. Rom 8:35-39; 2 Cor 12:7-10). The one who trusts in the Lord is promised the satisfaction of experiencing his deliverance (Ps 91:16). God is the One who adds “long life” to the believer (within the boundaries of his eternal decree) and He thereby makes life worthwhile. Focus your attention upon God for He alone enables our hearts to rest fully. Confidence in the Lord increases through an understanding of his majesty. Be assured that all who trust in the Lord God have his absolute, sovereign security.
