On March 10, 2020, California State Minister, Frank Erb and National Minister, Dr. Brad Harbaugh met with a visiting group of William Jessup University Students at the California Capitol. (Pics below) After sharing a brief on ministry to legislators, the students asked questions. Here are a few. “Why is it so important to teach legislators the Word of God?” “What place does Jesus have in our government?” "How does this ancient text guide us today?"

You might be asking those questions too!

First, "Why is it so important to teach legislators the Word of God?"

Legislators are called public servants appropriately because they bear a great burden. They are looked upon today to address the most complex of societal ills.

You are a witness to the extreme challenges of 2020.

The Bible brings an awareness that transcends what is humanly possible. God the Holy Spirit has presented, in the text of Scripture, insight into deep truths. He has done so in "human terms so people in our mental weakness can comprehend."1

Fingers are pointed to the cause of societal ills today. How often do you hear the problem is the ________? The Bible points out that the root problem of it all is evil, organized evil. Ironically, it is organized to bring disorganization and destroy God's image. Satan's army of demons is described as "not [being] flesh and blood; but [rather] principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness, and spiritual wickedness in heavenly realms."2 Furthermore, the character traits and strategies of this organized evil army are consistent. Throughout the Bible these traits and characeristics are made known. God commands His people to not be "ignorant of the devils schemes."

Scripture further informs that evil is not just a problem outside of us, out there-somewhere. Evil, contrary to what most believe, indwells every person. Mankind is fallen, all under the dominion of sin. Jesus made it clear that indwelling evil rises up in every heart.  "For from within, from the heart of people, come evil plans, immoralities, thefts, murders, adulteries, acts of greed, malicious deeds, deceit, licentiousness, envy, abusive speech, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a person." Isn't this a clear description of the world that we see?

Organized evil accomplishes its' work by moving what rises up in our hearts to action. Evil today is delighted to bring such chaos, hate, and hurt into this world.

So how do you ovecome this evil? Here's how...

Scripture not only makes us aware of our enemy but it also presents the only solution. That solution is placing our trust in the one and only Savior who accomplished redemption by performing in my place and paying the penalty of sin in my place. (Not just mine but also yours and every person who ever lived.) This substitutionary work of Jesus accomplished redemption for every person. The proof of accomplishment - Jesus rose from the dead!5 This good news is a gift extended to every person and it is received by faith in what Jesus has done. This seems easy but it is not. We are prone to want to save ourselves and continue in sin. So seeing yourself as unable to save yourself and turning from your sin to follow the Lord is essential to putting your trust in Jesus alone by faith. The greatest news is that, when received, this salvation not only frees a person from the penalty of their sin, but it also provides the power to overcome evil within and battle evil without. The Gospel is awesome!

How does it help us with the current concerns? The gospel living through us can change our world.

Because God loved us, and has given us value expressed on the cross we have the power to transcend racial differences "by being patient and bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace."6 At this moment, the gospel lived through us can minister to those around us who are hurting in the Black community. Listening, showing compassion and expressing love and concern is a statement of the gospel alive in us.

Organized evil works tirelessly to pit people against people. All the more, evil agendas often grab hold of movments for good. Only by learning to fear God, love people and making decisive actions by God's insights will man overcome evil.

There is another group also hurting terribly today, that is our police. God calls them his servants for good. He also commands each believer to fight evil through the priority action of "praying for Kings, and those in authority over you,"7 which would include civil servants. God gave this command to believers living under a wicked regime that held no value for life. They were imperfect leaders. Today every leader, no matter who, is imperfect. But God calls us to submit for they govern for our good.8

Jesus battled the strategies of Satan. He won the victory. His power was the Word of God, persistent prayer and submission to the will of God. We are called to the same.

The gospel, alive in each believer today, can change our world. That is why Capitol Commission stands in the gap teaching the Word, seeking to be Jesus representative in the midst of our legislative centers, calling the church to pray for our leaders.

  • Right now, as reported by our State Ministers, more legislators and supporting staff are attending Bible studies through internet led meetings.
  • This year more opportunities have opened for our State Ministers to speak in churches, civic groups, and give Bible insights to legislators. They have led prayer assemblies, Governor prayer breakfasts, and lead prayers in our legislative chambers.
  • This past February a Missouri legislator placed his trust in the Savior and is currently growing in his faith meeting weekly with his State Minister.
  • Our new Ohio State Minister is moving forward ministering to leaders one on one, building connections and establishing rapport.
  • In these days, our State Ministers are meeting with legislators hearing their burdens and praying with them one on one.

This is why Capitol Commission teaches the Word of God in our legislative Capitols.

Thank you for your prayers and partnership!

For His Glory,
